The Fire Keeper in Dark Souls 3 cannot see a thing through the lace of her mask. But she is like the clever barn owl. She is warm in the hug of night.
A champion arriveth eventually. They asketh the Fire Keeper to increase their Faith in the world. The land outside of the Fire Keeper's home in Firelink Shrine is as ruined as the stomach of a moldy pumpkin. It has some green places and some blue places, just like mold.
(I have not seen
As others saw—)
The Fire Keeper cannot turn away this champion, even though she is mildly disturbed by their smell. It lingers like cows in the sunshine.
Her generosity saves her. One day, the Fire Keeper's champion stops being so tiresome. They pass the Fire Keeper what looks to be a pair of frosted blueberries—no, they are two abyssal eyes. Eyes of a Fire Keeper, the first Fire Keeper from the kingdom of Lothric.
The first Fire Keeper was a woman with hair like silk and a seamstress' private smile, as all Fire Keepers have been. This kind of woman is not so easily frightened by the strange noises of the First Flame. Quite the opposite; the Fire Keeper women welcome weird mewling, uncommon creaks, and the unnaturally long exhales of a dying fire.
These qualifications are a must for the job. A Fire Keeper spends all day buried in soft darkness as if it were a kitten's neck.
But the jasmine beckoning of the night is also what betrayed the lovely Keeper from Lothric. It is said that she had once received a vision against the gods and welcomed the Age of Dark.
Darkness became her most dear lover. More precious than the Lord of Cinder in Lothric. Her eyes were scooped right out of her head as punishment.
(I could not awaken
My heart to joy)
Her glittering eyes plucked out like grey hairs now twinkle in the Fire Keeper's hand. It seems that the Lothric woman's vision is still safe within them.
The Fire Keeper knoweth not what to do. She is already betrothed in spirit to her Lords. But the romance of the dark is decadent. It gives the stones that form Firelink Shrine a floral scent.
Might that be the sugar smell of jasmine?
It hovers around the Fire Keeper like a halo. The sensation is wild and uncomfortable. While the Fire Keeper has indeed become an expert at dealing with strange sounds, her understanding of strange sights is limited because:
Her friend the Maiden in Black from Demon's Souls had her eye sockets filled with wax.
The Ash Maiden Anastacia of Astora was found dead in her cell in Dark Souls. It's much harder to see when you are dead.
The Emerald Herald in Dark Souls 2 only uses one eye, because her hair is too long.
The Doll in Bloodborne cries crystal tears, so there is something wrong with her tear ducts.
Even the student Fire Keeper Irina of Carim in Dark Souls 3 is beleaguered by cataracts.
(—in the dawn
Of a most stormy life)
The Fire Keeper's heart is dancing in fear. Her fingers fiddle with the intricate silver curls of her mask. For the first time in her life, she has noticed an itch on her eyebrow where she cannot reach.
In her panic, the Fire Keeper's thoughts turn to death. Fire Keepers can only die temporarily, after all, and a dagger through the breast might restore her sanity.
Everything could be as it has always been. But this doesn't satisfy the Fire Keeper, either. She paces Firelink Shrine nervously, stepping on the already fraying hem of her gown with her bare feet.
The worried Fire Keeper rubs the eyeballs in her hand with her thumb. Each time she turns the Eyes, streaks of light illuminate her thoughts. Her mind seems to turn from black to the pale yellow color of a healing bruise.
The Fire Keeper has a realization. Fire Keepers can dream in color regardless of whether their eyeballs are in their palms or in their heads.
She dreams by wearing a beautiful cloak the color of grey seal skin. Cloaks also adorn the Maiden in Black, the Ash Maiden, and Irina of Carim like spoonfuls of cream.
They are all made of wool and expensive fleece. But these noble coats and dresses were not designed by their wearers to keep out the cold. They keep secrets in.
Delicate motifs of diamonds and daisies vine around the Fire Keeper's cloak. The designs communicate how she feels to clever women: The Fire Keeper feels as special as a brilliant diamond when she performs her duty of tending the First Flame. But with her eyes stolen from her, the Fire Keeper also feels as unnoticed as a wild daisy.
She never complains about her injury out loud. She won't even tell a friend that she'd prefer to take two lumps of sugar instead of one in her English Breakfast tea.
But the Eyes of a Fire Keeper are tempting her to try something new.
It will be a challenge.
(a demon in my view—)
A vanilla smear of light passes through her mind, and her heart thumps.
The Fire Keeper no longer stops herself from pressing the blueberry eyes to her lace mask. H'r champion is out playing, and she doth not fear discovery.
Today, she accepts the gift of "second sight."
She peers into the dark for the first time. She sees that it has always hidden her own devil—
